The Solution Bundles tool, developed by NetZeroCities consortium partners Rosalía Simón de Lama, Ana Belén Gómez, Andrea Gabaldón, and Carolina Pastor at CARTIF, aims to do just that through better visualisation of complex urban problems and packaged solutions. The tool is explained here further by Rosalía Simón de Lama and Ana Belén Gómez.

Visualising Complex Urban Solutions

How do cities visualise complex urban solutions? And, having done so, how do they incorporate them into their climate strategies?

This is no easy task, but a valuable system is on the way for Mission Cities in the shape of the ‘Solutions Bundle’ tool, which will help cities find packaged solutions to reach goals related to:

  • E-mobility and electrification.
  • Low-carbon energy through sector coupling.
  • Reducing energy and resource needs.
  • Capturing, storing, and removing carbon.

Introducing the Solution Bundles Tool

Through a user-friendly interface, city officials will be offered a clear overview of complex concepts and how solutions can interconnect to effectively address urban challenges through the tool’s dynamic and interactive visualisations of city systems (see graphic).

Cities can use it to:
1. Inspire and Engage: Transforming discussions into actionable strategies and facilitating ‘co-creation’ between stakeholders and municipalities as an interactive space.

2. Customise Climate Strategies: Start with a structured experience or a blank canvas, and tailor the city’s climate strategy by selecting or unselecting specific parts of the bundle.

Simplifying the Selection Process

Cities begin by selecting the ‘bundle’ they want to focus on and then customise the solutions by selecting or unselecting boxes to show or hide specific parts of the bundle, ensuring that only the most relevant solutions for their aim are displayed.

These are linked to detailed factsheets in the Knowledge Repository – a vast library of knowledge uploaded by cities and experts and maintained by NetZeroCities – allowing users to take a deeper dive into this targeted information.

Accessing the Solution Bundles Tool

Access to the tool is currently available in Beta via the NetZeroCities Portal, sign in and explore for yourself. If you’re interested in being part of our ongoing test group for the Solutions Bundle Tool, contact us at blog [@] netzerocities.eu and we’ll put you in touch with the team, or, conversely, you can fill in the feedback button directly on the Solutions Bundle landing page to express you interest.
